Judith Brust: Life Cycles

L'Attitude Gallery is pleased to present new works by Judith A. Brust. Judith works in various media, but is perhaps best known for her larger scale layered monoprints. Through the use of natural elements and layered colors, Judith's monoprints focus on nature, balance and coexistence.

Influenced by extensive readings in the works of Carl Jung, Joseph Campbell and Gaston Bachelard, and inspired by the spiritual quality in the works of fellow painters and sculptors Mark Rothko, Paul Klee, Louise Bourgeois and Eva Hesse, Brust's art is both compelling and intriguing in its complexity.

Judith gave private drawing lessons in her home studio while raising three children and fulfilling her responsibilities as the wife of a corporate executive. When her three children were grown, she went back to school and received her MA and MFA from SUNY Albany. She has exhibited extensively in both group and solo shows in the Northeast for the past thirty years, and her work is held in many private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

We are pleased to announce our second show at Copley Place. Each piece in this installation has been created from natural materials, either ceramic or stone. We happily went to work pulling pieces together for the show and decided to feature an array of techniques and forms, including saggar-fired figures, a whimsical mosaic tea party sculpture, and ceramic reeds that shoot upwards in vibrant hues. These unusual ceramics are on display at Copley now through November 30.

Discovering Sculpture at Copley Place

L'Attitude's sculpture installation at Copley Place interacts with the natural, commercial, and architectural surroundings through a varied yet cohesive ensemble. At first glance, spotting all twenty sculptures on display demands an attentive visual combing of the space. The larger sculptures emerge first from among the flora. The sculpture materials, which include bronze, aluminum, glass, and stone, contrast with the natural look of the foliage and the water cascading down a three-story waterfall and burbling through the atrium's fountains. Yet the geometrical shapes, particularly the discs and rings in the sculptures, reflect those used in the waterfall wall. And, upon closer inspection, the geometric sculptures displayed at the waterfall's base blend beautifully with the natural surroundings through their organic curves that grow to resemble branches and leaves.

Global and natural motifs in the sculptures fuse people with the earth and its animals. The human bodies in "Human Sphere" and "Stargazer" coexist with a formidable, weighty round rhinoceros rolled back on his haunches, a fish spiked through with a metal rod, a stone whale, and stone sculptures with carved reliefs of a lobster, a starfish, and another fish. The "Stargazer," though a human form, stands as spindly and elongated as a dainty flamingo.

The eclecticism of the pieces chosen for this installation reflects the diversity of styles and mediums exhibited in our gallery. The range in forms and display methods conveys that this is an installation to be enjoyed by passersby of all heights and ages. Whales and sea creatures nestle by the gurgling water at children's eye level, while the more formally displayed blue glass vase and rhinoceros will attract shoppers accustomed to more museum-like displays of art. Whether you are ambling or beelining through the mall, we invite you to pause and engage with this hide-and-seek installation!

Here is some new artwork that we recently put on display in the gallery.....

Mary Calkins' colorful abstracts paintings on board (12"x12" each) are titled "Be-Bop I, II and III." "Be-Bop I" and "Be-Bop II" are shown here.

Don Williams has an interesting metal and ceramic piece called "Dreaming Spring". The combination of "hard" (metal) and "soft" (ceramic) elements makes for an interesting composition with a cutting edge feel (18" x 12").

And Stephanie Warburg's atmospheric "Not the End of Summer But the Beginning of Fall" in oil, 18" x 24", has been attracting attention.

"Coastal Sails" Mosaic installed at Children's Hospital Boston

L'Attitude Gallery recently commissioned a large (25 sq. ft) custom wall mosaic for a wall near one of the entrances at Children's Hospital Boston. The piece, "Coastal Sails" was art directed by Betty Bothereau. The artist was Sara Morton and Artaic Innovative Mosaic used their robotic system to transform it into a mosaic of 3/8" vitreous glass tiles. We work with a number of artists who can create designs - in a variety of styles - that are well suited for glass tile mosaic murals. Please contact us if you are interested in a commission.

The Josh Beckett Treatment Room features brightly rendered images of the Red Sox playing in Fenway Park, with Josh Beckett at the mound. The artwork covers the walls and cabinets, as well as parts of the floor and doors, providing entertainment and a useful distraction for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Columns (below) are wrapped with abstract imagery, brightening a nurses' station.

Worcester area art installation

Working in consultation with the medical staff, facilities representatives and the architect, L'Attitude Gallery art consultants selected artwork to enhance an internal medicine waiting area. Betty Bothereau, owner of L'Attitude Gallery, has curated an exhibit of outdoor sculptures that will be on display at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center for the coming year. On June 20, over 250 guests attended a reception for the Fourth Annual Summer Street Solstice Art Celebration and Kick Off Event for the SummersDay Revels held at BCEC. Sculptors whose work is represented in the show include Rob Lorenson, Ian Mogavero, Patrick Pierce, Reno Pisano, Otello Guarducci, Whitmore Boogaerts, and Pan QuQin.

L'Attitude Gallery Coordinates Mosaic Workshop at Children's Hospital in Boston

Mosaic artist, Bette Ann Libby, is creating 16 new flower mosaics for the Parent Sleep Area at Children's Hospital in Boston - with the help of patients, their familes and CHB staff. Libby is running a workshop in the Cafe at Children's this week, June 3, 4, and 5 from 11am - 3pm. All are welcome to participate in placing ceramic fragments into the designs created by Libby, who also offers mosaic workshops in her studio in Brookline, MA.

The idea for this project stemmed from a collaboration between L'Attitude Gallery owner, Betty Bothereau, and the hospital's Art Coordinator, Jessica Finch.

Eric Clapton purchases art from L'Attitude Gallery

We were surprised and delighted yesterday when guitar legend, Eric Clapton, came to the gallery -- and purchased several scuptural objects for his boat. Clapton is in Boston for a concert tomorrow night at the Tweeter Center. We were pleased that he stopped by and that we were able to find several stone scuptures (including four pieces by entertainment reporter turned stone sculptor Dixie Whatley), glass pieces and a ceramic vessel that suited his taste.

"Moon over White Mountain"

"Moon over White Mountain" is Roger Thomas' stunning new fused glass wall piece. Roger creates his compositions using glass elements that he carefully cuts, arranges and layers. The piece is then fired (sometimes several times) at very high temperatures. You really have to see one of Roger's pieces to understand this dramatic medium. The simple but classic iron frame (which Roger also designs) holds the glass in place and enhances its drama.

Size is 51" w x 33" h x 2" d including frame.
